American Association of Yoga in Daily Life

Humanitarian Projects

Karma Yoga is the way of selfless work for the benefit of all living beings. The great Saint Sri Deep Mahaprabhuji said: "True joy can be found in the service of all creatures, and in this is the wisdom and meaning of life."

Following these principles the American Association of Yoga in Daily Life works to make a positive contribution locally and also provides support for the international humanitarian initiatives of Paramhans Swami Maheshwarananda (Swamiji).

Initiatives in India include working with the local community to provide health services, environmental conservation, humanitarian aid, education programs, and the implementation of long term poverty reduction strategies. The American Yoga in Daily Life centers support these initiatives by providing financial aid, volunteer workers, fundraising, and campaigns to raise international awareness of third world issues.

International India

Education
In India, not all children have equal opportunity to receive an education. To address this issue, members of the International Society of Yoga in Daily Life founded the Gyan Putra program, which provides financial support for the children of poor families to attend school. This sponsorship program helps children attain a reasonable standard of education and thus grants them better employment opportunity for the future. In 2002 the Shree Vishwa Deep Gurukul Prathmik Vidyalaya, Yoga in Daily Life's primary school in Rajasthan, India, was founded.

Rainwater
To address the major water crisis in the desert state of Rajasthan, India, the International Sri Deep Madhavananda Ashram Fellowship has launched a Desert Rainwater Harvesting initiative. See more...

Healthcare
The "Sri Swami Madhavananda Hospital", currently under construction in the Pali district of Rajasthan, India, will serve as a naturopathic and allopathic hospital. This will provide residential health care to neighboring districts. Until the hospital is complete, the Jadan Ashram will continue to provide a free mobile ambulance service to the surrounding rural area.

Women's Education
The Jadan Ashram is host to residential education programs for women. Graduates of the program are able to act as the advisors within their local community on matters of child development, hygiene and on the education and development of girls up until their maturity.

Reforestation
The Jadan Ashram has a long term project of reforestation with the planting of roughly 5,000 trees in 2002. To date there have been over 45,000 trees successfully planted in this area. The Ashram's organic farm aims to be a model for the local area, as local farmers use pesticides heavily. Research is ongoing for the production of natural pesticides from the local Neem tree. The Ashram produces organic vegetables, wheat, corn, barley and various seeds and spices.

Relief
The Jadan Ashram fire truck is available for fire fighting 24 hours a day. In the peak season for fires, temperatures are 110 - 115 degrees and the winds are strong and dry. During this time the Ashram fire brigade is called on 2-3 times a day and in the 2002 season they answered over 60 calls for help. A dual use of the fire truck is to transport water to the drought stricken remote villages. In May-June 2002 4,800 gallons of water per day was distributed.

Animal Refuge
The desert region of Rajasthan is a harsh environment to live in and the current drought is particularly hard on cattle set free by villagers who can no longer afford to feed them. Within the Jadan Ashram a large animal refuge has been built, which provides humane veterinary care for over 300 old, homeless and sick animals. One of the outcomes of the reforestation project is the fresh fodder for the animals. This increased nutrition enhances their recovery to good health.
